Definitions for the HCSR Profile

 

 

Apprenticeship    An agreement between an employer who needs a skilled worker and an individual who wants to earn while learning a skilled occupation.  The employer provides on-the-job training and related instruction in a technical school or other classroom setting.  Sponsoring businesses are registered with the Virginia Department of Labor and Industry.

 

Student Apprenticeship    A structured course of study, jointly sponsored by the school and an employer, which integrates academic curricula, worksite learning, and work experience leading to high school or post-secondary school credits and options for entry level jobs.  Sponsoring businesses are registered with the Virginia Department of Labor and Industry.

 

Career Fair    An event held which exposes students to an array of careers that will allow them the opportunity to inquire and learn more about all of their options.

 

Career Speaker    A speaker who will share with students, insights and information on preparing for a career in his/her business, industry and/or career field.

 

Cooperative Education    Part-time employment directly related to a technical education class.  A school coordinator monitors the student.

 

Internships    Paid or non-paid work experiences in which students work in the actual  business environment for a fixed period on a temporary basis for the purpose of learning about that business.

 

Job Shadowing    A short-term structured experience, on site, where students explore a career by following an employee during a day or portion of a day.

 

On-the-job-Training    Hands on training by an employer in a specific skilled trade or profession.  Prior training is not a prerequisite.

 

Loan Repayment Programs    Individual agreement between business and employee regarding assistance with educational expenses previously incurred through a formal loan program.

 

Mentorship    A long-term relationship during which the mentor works with a student to assist them in developing interpersonal skills, job skills and personal qualities.  Mentors may advise students in their work on a project related to a topic of study.

 

Service Learning    An experience at a worksite or community agency (typically non-profit) during which the student participates in volunteer projects.

 

Scholarships    Employment or training experience with a business qualifies a student or employee for scholarships offered directly by the business or through its affiliations.

 

Tuition Assistance    Employer pays all or part of tuition costs of technical or educational courses related to work situation.

 

Tuition Reimbursement    Employer reimburses employee for tuition costs of technical or educational courses completed successfully by employee and meeting employer guidelines for grade and content.

 

Workplace Tour    A visit to a worksite with the purpose of exposing students to careers.
